Another book giveaway is well overdue, so here it is!! This time we are giving away a secondhand copy of 1001 Books You Must Read Before You Die: A Comprehensive Reference Source, Chronicling the History of the Novel (edited by Peter Boxall). I have a well-used copy of this book on my shelf complete with labels marking the books I've read. I'm ashamed to say that despite my best intentions I have only read about 45 of the books listed. Why is it we skip so many classics? Maybe because there are so many. Perhaps this book will give we a reading plan.

The book you should read before you die IMO is The Secret River by Kate Grenville, especially if you are an historical fiction lover. It's well researched, written and is a portrait of New South Wales before it became Australia.

Please enter me in your contest. I didn't realize that there was a book about this list. I have had the list on my computer for several years and check every now and then to see if I have any more to check off. I have read about 41 of them. Most very good books.
ReplyDeleteI would recommend both A Christmas Carol by Charles Dickens and The Picture of Dorian Gray b Oscar Wilde. Both should encourage the reader to truly look at them self and evaluate who they find there and whether they like the person they are.
Last Evenings on Earth by Roberto Bolano, Crow by Ted Hughes, After Babel by George Steiner, The sea & Poison by Shusaku Endo, Michael Jackson's Malt Whisky Companion,Underground by Haruki Murakami, Raw Spirit By Iain Banks, Oh I dont know, I'll stick my hand in the pile & see what comes out, just too many to choose from.
ReplyDeletePs. I need this book to add structure to my reading etc.

ReplyDeleteI would recommend The Mabinogion Tetralogy by Evangeline Walton. It's basically a retelling of Welsh mythology. It was amazing when I first read it, and it was still amazing when I reread it the next week.
I would recommend The Road by Cormac McCarthy or Never Let Me Go by Kazuo Ishiguro.

Everyone should read Sophie's World by Jostein Gaarder at least once. Absolutely brilliant and beautiful. I just had my copy (given to me by my best friend when I was in year 11) signed by him at the Melbourne Writers Festival - I was SO excited I bought a new copy to have signed too!

Thanks to everyone who entered our 1001 Books You Must Read Before You Die competition. The winning announcement is a little overdue, but we can now congratulate Rad Hall who nominated Collapse by Jared Diamond as his suggestion for the book everyone must read before they die. This book is actually sitting in my shelf waiting to be read, so maybe I should see this as a sign and get stuck into it!! Stay tuned for our next competition coming very soon!!
ReplyDeleteThanks to Rad for posting a review of '1001 Books You Must Read Before You Die' after winning it on the Feed Your Reading Habit blog. If you'd like to see what Rad had to say just use the following link - http://smrti-sruti.blogspot.com/2010/11/1001-books-you-must-read-before-you-die.html.
ReplyDeleteOut of concern for readers who might find his original review a little lengthy, Rad has provided a more bite sized review here of '1001 Books You Must Read Before You Die'. He says, "1001 is a most useful resource for readers. A hefty little tome with glossy pages, loads of images and some pretty nifty entries, it includes works ranging from a wide variety of eras, countries and original languages (although the book does have its biases). Whether arguing about what has been included, bemoaning the works that have not, or discussing the redundancy in the title, it is has the potential to provide readers a goodly amount of pleasure or peptic ulcers and perhaps both. Peruse at your peril.
ReplyDeleteEnjoy." Thanks, Rad!!
